Pat Austin Biography

Pat Austin is one of the most popular and richest Racing Driver who was born on November 12, 1964 in Tacoma, United States. Austin was the first to win a double eliminator victory at the 1992 double eliminator at Phoenix. Austin won his place in the Top Fuel finals and beat his uncle, fellow competitor Bucky Austin in the finals of the Alcohol Funny Car. Austin took home Top Fuel at the 1993 U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park over Doug Herbert in a tire-smoking peddlefest final round. The fifth and last Top Fuel win was at Englishtown over Don “The Snake” Prudhomme in 1994, winning by an average of 4.88 against Prudhomme’s 4.89. The final race of his career was in 1995 in Sonoma California losing to Mike Dunn. Austin was the very first racer to hit the speed of 250 miles/hour in a quarter mile of an Alcohol Funny Car in 1995.

In 2000, he recorded his 70th career victory, which put him fourth on the NHRA all-time win list. He had his 75th national victory at Pomona’s 2002 NHRA Winternationals. At that time he had 81 points wins for a total of 156 victories.

In 2001, the NHRA ranked him 13th in their Top 50 drivers of all-time.

Austin took home his first national championship the next year. He took home four of the five titles between 1987 and 1991. He lost the championship in 1989. Austin was in the finals eight times in 1987, and also won six events. The following year, he won his second title in 1988. This season was notable for six wins and the first U.S. Nationals win. He scored his highest wins in 1989, with nine wins (including winning the U.S. Nationals). Brad Anderson won the season championship, after Anderson was a better performer when racing divisional race. Austin was the winner of the championship in 1990 with 12 finals and 9 winners in events. Austin won the championship in 1991 in July (with only four months to go) after completing the first complete five national and five divisional wins in the season. After the passing of Gary Ormsby from cancer; Austin purchased the Castrol GTX Top Fuel operation prior to his participation in the U.S. Nationals. Austin raced both cars at the race after testing his brand new Top Fuel dragster at one local competition. After winning the finals of the Alcohol Funny Car at the following competitions, Austin’s blower failed during the burnout finals. Austin was forced to watch Kenny Bernstein as he smoked his tires to take his Top Fuel finals in a single. Austin continued to race each car at events, pledging to be a winner in both vehicles. His double elimination victory was two days after the event at Topeka. Austin won the finals of the Alcohol Funny Car against Chuck Cheeseman with a 5.97 second run and then winning the Top Fuel finals over Joe Amato with the 4.97 second run. Austin was able to avenge his last race Top Fuel loss to Bernstein at the Winston Finals at Pomona and began the 1992 season with finishing second in his race for the season during the Motorcraft Ford Nationals in Phoenix Arizona over Doug Herbert. From 1987 to 1991 he competed in the finals of 57 national events and took home 43.

He started drag racing throughout the Northwestern United States, where He won around 90 percent of the races were entered. He began participating in the National circuit in the year 1985. Austin was the first to win a national title in the year 1986, winning his first national title, the Cajun Nationals. He took the title in the next event in the Springnationals. He finished second in numerous events and was unable to win the championship of the season in 1986 at the final round of the Fallnationals to Brad Anderson.

In 1999, Austin noticed that IHRA drivers such as Von Smith having success in Hoosier Racing Tires. Austin had been experiencing severe tire shake and tire spinning problems. So he purchased a set of Hoosiers at the U.S. Nationals and used them in second round qualifying at the next event at Dallas, which was the first time that Hoosiers were used in an NHRA event. After having a relatively slow pass, he made gear ratio adjustments at later events. He started using the tires for all passes after having a 5.64 second pass. He had the first pass in the 5.5 second range (5.56 seconds at 257 mph) and won the race, marking the first time that a Hoosier tire won an NHRA Alcohol Funny Car event.
